Drawing: Playing with graphite and charcoal (Miniature Schnauzer)

I have started a new drawing today. This is of a miniature schnauzer, on Arches watercolour paper, approx. 40x40cm.

I used a grid as I wanted to get this dog’s face and proportions accurately before I started using charcoal. It certainly makes for a quicker drawing. This took about an hour all up, including the grid. I’m going to erase this back to very faint lines and then start with the charcoal.

My drawing is noticeably quicker and better after the year of constant drawing at TAFE. I’m going to have to keep it up as I don’t want to lose the momentum I have developed over the last twelve months. I want to do some life drawing and plein air to loosen up even more, which should be fun.

  1. That’s certainly a Schnauzer! I have a very good friend who is Schnauzer crazy (she’s got 2) – she’d love this drawing.

Looking forward to seeing the finished product – looking great already!

  2. how about some life drawing IN plein air? 2 birds with one stone!
