A place to share my creative pursuits

Drawing: Southern Queen of Sheba Orchid in Oil pastels (WIP#1)

I’m back to work finally – my daughter is back to school this week so I can get down to some serious (well…serious for me anyway) drawing.

I spent the day with my sister-in-law. We did the same fine arts course last year and have decided to continue to work together on a regular basis. Her feedback and critiques are invaluable and doing the course together has really enriched our relationship.

So,  today we decided to play with oil pastels.

This is a Southern Queen of Sheba orchid, a wild orchid native to Western Australia. A friend of mine goes hunting for them in WA and was kind enough to share some photos with me.

I am working with Sennelier and CrayPas oil pastels on Canson Mi-Teintes TEX paper (A3 size), aubergine colour. This is the first time I have used the oil pastels on this paper. I really like the way it takes the pastel.

This is after about 1.5 hours work.

The flowers are quite vibrant so it will be interesting to see how the oil pastels blend. I am more used to the way soft pastels blend to create unusual colours/tints. I have been fairly tentative with the background so far – it will develop as I lay down more colour.
