Ceramics: A semester of Sculpture

I have started going to a night class at TAFE in ceramic sculpture. The tutor is Susan Jorgensen, who is a fantastic teacher of pretty much anything ceramics. So every Tuesday night til the end of the year, I will be creating with clay! Yippee!!

We are starting with vertical sculpture – multiple pieces either glued together or made so they can slip onto a pole. This is the base of the piece I am going to be working on. I’ll carve a hole out of the centre of this for the pole to slip through and then build onto that.

Then I am creating smaller pieces that will be joined together and decorated, and a hole cut through so they can slip onto the pole. We use plates or bowls to form the shapes and then use sprigs to decorate, which we spent the whole first night making so they could be fired and ready to use.

As I build more pieces and finish them I’ll post my progress. The inspiration for this piece is flames/fire so it will be interesting to see if this changes as I slowly build up the piece.
