Mississhippi's Madness

A place to share my creative pursuits

Drawing: Soft pastel portrait of a child (WIP#1)

Today I started sketching in a portrait, first one I’ve done in a while.

It is not finished, and I feel a bit funny about posting an uncompleted sketch (artistic insecurity and all that), but it is part of my process to post a picture as I go. Each time I spend a block of time on a work, I take a photo and post it as it was at the end of that time, usually after a two hour stint (today was a bit shorter than that as I had to sort out composition first).

The eyes are spot on, but the nose and eyes are too large still as I didn’t have time to reduce them back to match the size of the rest of the face, and I need to work on the placement of the shoulders. I always have these little things to iron out when I am starting out a sketch, especially if drawing freehand rather than using a grid. But it will come together in the end.

I’ll continue working on this next week (my usual days for art are Monday to Wednesday – the rest of the week devoted to family and house) and will start adding colour once I have sorted out my quibbles with this sketch – that is always the fun part.
